New York City Insider: Representative Adriano Espaillat Introduces the Earth Act.

PRESS RELEASE

For Immediate Release

February 3, 2023

Representative Adriano Espaillat Introduces the Earth Act.

Legislation Aims to Stop Climate Pollution by 2030.

WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) leads climate response with the introduction of a new bill aimed at stopping climate pollution by 2030.

The Earth Act to Stop Climate Pollution by 2030 is cosponsored by Reps. Nydia Velázquez (NY-07), Barbara Lee (CA-12), Jerrold Nadler (NY-12), and Raúl Grijalva (AZ-07) and is endorsed by Climate Crisis Policy, The Earth Bill Network, Eco-Justice Collaborative, New York Progressive Action Network, Chesapeake Climate Action Network, Jefferson County Farmers & Neighbors, Santa Cruz Climate Action Network, Green Team Academy, GreenLatinos, Oceanic Global, among others.

“Greenhouse gas concentrations are at an all-time high and if we are to avoid the continued mounting losses of life, biodiversity, and infrastructure, we must take ambitious action today to adapt to climate change and cut greenhouse gas emissions significantly,” said Rep. Espaillat. “My bill, the Earth Act to Stop Climate Pollution by 2030, ensures the U.S. will make a comprehensive transition towards a green future by requiring 100 percent renewable electricity, 100 percent zero emission vehicles, and increased regenerative agriculture by 2030. Congress must take bold steps to enact legislation that will effectively address the climate crisis we face today to prevent further devastation in our future.”

The Earth Act to Stop Climate Pollution by 2030 will:

*       Mandate 100 percent renewable electricity production by 2030;

*       Amend the Clean Air Act to mandate 100 percent zero emission motor vehicle production by 2030;

*       Establish increased regenerative agricultural practices in the United States by 2030; and

*       Create grant programs to assist in the transition to renewable electricity, zero emission vehicles, and regenerative agriculture.

Studies show that people of color, women, children, the elderly, persons with disabilities, low-income persons, and individuals with underlying health conditions face even greater risks due to climate change. In addition, the National Centers for Environmental Information found that, in 2022, there were 18 climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each that affected the United States.

If our current inaction continues, the United States and the world will begin to see even more devastating effects such as food insecurity, drought, poverty, and displacement. The Earth Act to Stop Climate Pollution by 2030 accomplishes these goals with a comprehensive approach on renewable electricity, zero-emission vehicles, and regenerative agriculture, putting our nation on a strengthened path toward a more sustainable climate future.
