Representative Adriano Espaillat Applauds Biden Administration Designation of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan.
Espaillat Led Congressional Effort Urging Administration to Provide Vital Humanitarian Protections to Afghans. WASHINGTON, D.C. – Following a letter led by Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13), the Biden administration has announced Temporary Protected States (TPS) designation for Afghanistan.
“I applaud the Biden administration for granting TPS for Afghans who are still suffering in the wake of the Taliban taking control of Kabul,” said Rep. Espaillat. “The United States has a moral and humanitarian responsibility to support Afghans during such trying times like these, and this announcement will provide vital, life-saving protection from deportation for Afghan nationals who call the United States home.”
“This TPS designation will help to protect Afghan nationals who have already been living in the United States from returning to unsafe conditions,” said Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas. “Under this designation, TPS will also provide additional protections and assurances to trusted partners and vulnerable Afghans who supported the U.S. military, diplomatic, and humanitarian missions in Afghanistan over the last 20 years.”

Through Operation Allies Welcome, most Afghan nationals who arrived as part of the evacuation effort were paroled into the United States on a case-by-case basis, for humanitarian reasons, for a period of two years and received work authorization.
