Representative Adriano Espaillat Statement Following Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s Joint Address to Congress.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) release the following statement after attending Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s virtual joint address to the United States Congress:

“President Zelenskyy made clear to us and the world that he – and the Ukrainian people – will defend Ukrainian sovereignty and statehood to the very end, no matter what,” said Rep. Espaillat. “And he pleaded that America stand with him and every Ukrainian in this fight. President Zelenskyy reiterated to us that Putin’s baseless, unprovoked, and immoral war on Ukraine has caused a catastrophic loss of life and human suffering, leaving a humanitarian crisis of monstrous proportions in its wake – and that the United States can, and must, do everything in our power to prevent war crimes from continuing in Ukraine, hold the Russian government accountable, and support Ukrainians who are fleeing for their lives. Putin’s brazen assaults on residential buildings, schools, synagogues and churches across Ukraine, and his targeting of innocent Ukrainians throughout this conflict makes clear he is a man without remorse, a moral compass, or respect for international law. The United States has a moral and humanitarian responsibility to support Ukrainians during this ongoing conflict – and we will.”

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his third term in Congress. Representative Espaillat currently serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Committee on Appropriations responsible for funding the federal government’s vital activities. He is also a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), where he serves in a leadership role as the Second Vice Chair and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, where he serves as Deputy Whip. Representative Espaillat also currently serves as a Senior Whip of the Democratic Caucus. To find out more about Rep. Espaillat, visit online at https://espaillat.house.gov/.
