Representative Adriano Espaillat Statement Recognizing Women’s History Month.

Espaillat to Highlight Women from the District Throughout the Month.

WASHINGTON, DC -- Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement in recognition of Women’s History Month. Since March of 1987, the celebration of Women’s History Month has been an essential time of reflection on the incredible women who have helped shape our nation. During the month, Rep. Espaillat will highlight women from New York’s 13th congressional district.

“Women’s History Month is a crucial time to recognize the powerful voices of women who have helped shape and implement policies to ensure the rights and equal treatment of women and all persons throughout our local communities, the nation, and around the world,” said Rep. Espaillat.

“In all aspects of life, there have been countless issues pertaining to women that have historically been governed by men – from the struggle for women’s equality through efforts including voting rights, unequal pay, health inequities, and an explicit lack of equal opportunity to name a few – that time has come to an end. As we celebrate the progress that has been made to champion women’s rights, we reaffirm our efforts to address the persistent issues that remain. Women have played a tremendous role in molding our nation's past, present, and future, and the growing population of women in places of leadership reflects those triumphs, but there is still much work to do to ensure inclusivity, equality, equal pay and protections of reproductive rights to ensure all women are able to thrive and succeed.”

This Congress, Democrats have championed legislation to promote enhanced equality for women across the nation, including the Equal Rights Amendment which has the potential to distinctly and permanently ban discrimination based on gender. While the amendment continues to be discussed amongst lawmakers, so far this Congress, Rep. Espaillat and House Democrats have passed essential legislation such as the Paycheck Fairness Act, which has been signed into law and limits the ability for businesses to justify unequal pay based on gender. Additionally, House Democrats passed the Women’s Health Protection Act to protect the rights of women’s bodily autonomy and choice to obtain an abortion, critical legislation that, if passed by the Senate, would protect a woman’s right to choose permanently.

Further, House Democrats passed the American Rescue Plan, which was one of the single biggest investments in women and families in the last decade. The expansion of the child tax credit lowered child poverty by 40 percent—and Democrats are hopeful it will be renewed under the impending Build Back Better Act. Rep. Espaillat has also taken lead in combatting issues that disproportionately impact women, including transportation inequity, immigration reform, affordable housing, healthcare, and gun violence. This Congress, he introduced H.Res.798 – a resolution expressing the sense of Congress regarding the relationship between firearm violence and intimate partner violence and to honor the memory of Northern Manhattan’s Gladys Ricart and other victims of intimate partner homicide killed by firearms, and for other purposes. The Congressman remains committed to being a proponent of intersectional women rights.

In an effort to uplift the inspiring women from New York’s 13th congressional district, Rep. Espaillat encourages constituents from New York’s 13th congressional district to nominate a woman who has made a difference in the community to be recognized by his office throughout the month of March. Click here to submit nominations today.

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his third term in Congress. He is also a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), where he serves in a leadership role as the Second Vice Chair and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, where he serves as Deputy Whip.
