ESPAILLAT HOSTS YOSSELIN ALVAREZ AS VIRTUAL GUEST TO STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS. Espaillat Invites Alvarez, a DACA Recipient, Highlighting Impact of Immigrants to Nation Ahead of President Biden’s State of the Union Address. WASHINGTON, DC -- Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) announced Yosselin Alvarez, a DACA recipient, future law student, and a community leader, as his virtual guest to this year’s State of the Union Address further highlighting the impact of immigrants on the fabric of American society. “Our country has made tremendous strides this past year, yet there is more work that remains in our efforts to deliver comprehensive immigration reform. To ensure immigrants and their families remain at the forefront of our nation discussion, I have invited Yosselin Alvarez as my virtual guest for this year’s State of the Union Address. As we continue to highlight the significant contributions of millions of immigrants who contribute to the success of their community and our nation as a whole – I am proud to honor Yosselin and share her story with millions of others who like her are DACA recipients, future leaders, and making a difference in their communities around the nation. Immigrants and Dreamers, like Yosselin are vital to our nation’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, and we have a duty to keep the legacy of our nation of immigrants alive by delivering a comprehensive reform that will make that dream a reality,” said Rep. Espaillat.
“At the age of 6, I was brought into the U.S. from Mexico by my parents. Shortly after our arrival, my family settled in the Bronx, New York. The Bronx became my home and it is where I have grown up, pursued my education, and it is where I have applied my passion for community service,” said Yosselin Alvarez, who plans to watch the speech from her home in the Bronx. “I am currently a recipient of Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and being a DACA recipient has allowed me to become the first in my family to attend college. It has been nearly a decade since DACA’s implementation, and I cannot visualize my life progressing the way it has without DACA.”
Yosselin Alvarez completed a double major undergraduate degree at Lehman College. She graduated Cum Laude and with both Departmental Honors and scholar-athlete awards, and throughout her undergraduate studies worked and interned for various local non-profit organizations. She is currently a Paralegal working to assist individuals with legal assistance in personal injury cases. In the foreseeable future, Yosselin wishes to attend the University of California Berkeley School of Law to become an attorney and contribute to the current legal system, through service provision, and policy advocacy and implementation.
