Representative Adriano Espaillat Statement Marking One-Year Anniversary of the January 6th Insurrection.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Today, Representative Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) released the following statement on the one-year anniversary since the January 6th attack on the United States Capitol:

“Today marks one year since the attack on the United States Capitol, and I will never forget the events that occurred during one of the darkest days in the history of our democracy and one of the most solemn days of my tenure in public service,” said Rep. Espaillat.

“The insurrection incited by Donald Trump and abetted by his most ardent supporters and allies in Congress, was an assault on our American Democracy in an attempt to undermine the process to certify our election results. They threatened the lives of members of Congress, our leadership and law enforcement officers. As we reflect on today, we remember the Capitol Hill police officers who lost their lives and the many officers who continue to be impacted by the violence of that day.

“Shortly after the attack on our Capitol, Congress passed an emergency security supplemental which has allowed the U.S. Capitol Police to make hundreds of important reforms and improvements over the past year in five critical areas. Namely: training, equipment and personnel, operational planning, Civil Disturbance Unit, and intelligence and incident command. This was a key investment to protect the safety of not only our Capitol, but the men and women who are tasked to protect it as well as the thousands of staff and visitors who journey through the People's House daily.

“When first sworn into office, I took an oath to support and defend the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic and as we reflect on the one year since this deadly assault, I vow to never allow anyone to revise history or minimize the gravity of events that took place on that infamous day – and continue my work to ensure the values of our American Democracy remain viable and strong.”

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his third term in Congress. Representative Espaillat currently serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Committee on Appropriations responsible for funding the federal government’s vital activities. He is also a member of the House Committee on Education and Labor and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC), where he serves in a leadership role as the Second Vice Chair and is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, where he serves as Deputy Whip. Representative Espaillat also currently serves as a Senior Whip of the Democratic Caucus. To find out more about Rep. Espaillat, visit online at https://espaillat.house.gov/.
